  • McCarthy leads Bears to victory

    STONINGTON — Freshman Grace McCarthy captured first places in the vaulting, balance beam, floor exercise and all-around competition to lead the Stonington High gymnastics team to its first victory of the season in a 116.75-80.95 Eastern Connecticut Conference triumph over Windham Monday.

    McCarthy scored first-place totals of 8.3 in the vault, 8.4 on the floor, 7.6 on the balance beam and placed second on the uneven bars with a 6.8 to register an all-around score of 31.1. The Bears’ team score was a season high.

    McCarthy edged teammate Abbey Contino, who scored 30.05 in the all-around after winning the bars with a 7.0 and finishing second on the vault (8.05) and third on the floor (7.8) and beam (7.3) for Stonington (1-4, 1-1 ECC). Windham fell to 0-2, 0-2 ECC.

    Megan Roberts finished second on the beam (7.3), fourth on the floor (6.9), fifth overall on the bars (3.5), fifth overall on the vault (7.8) for an all-around score of 25.5.

    Stonington’s Paige Hackney was fourth overall (8.0) in the vault, third overall on the beam (7.2) and second on the floor (8.0).

    Hannah Capizzano placed fourth overall on the bars (3.5) for Stonington, which travels to East Lyme on Jan. 24 for a 3 p.m. meet.
