  • Bears host Class S opener

    Stonington High will begin its quest for a Class S field hockey state championship on Tuesday with a home game.

    The Bears, seeded No. 3 in the Class S bracket, will host Old Saybrook. The playoff pairings were released Friday.

    Stonington, which lost to Haddam-Killingworth 2-0 in the Class S title game last season, is 14-2. The Bears were 13-1 in the ECC winning the league title for the 27th time in the last 29 seasons.

    Old Saybrook, the No. 14 seed, is 7-6-3. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Stonington’s new artificial turf field.

    If Stonington should win, the Bears would host No. 6 Haddam-Killingworth or No. 11 Lewis Mills on Thursday. The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 12 or 13 and the finals Nov. 16 at Wethersfield.

    Nonnewaug (15-0-0-1) is the top seed among the 17 teams that qualified.

    Stonington hosting

    Class M game

    Stonington will host Weston in a Class M boys’ soccer game on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

    The Bears (11-5-2) are the No. 10 seed, while Weston (5-4-6) is the No. 23 seed. Stonington lost in the ECC semifinals to East Lyme 2-1 on Wednesday.

    If Stonington should win on Tuesday, it would play again on Thursday traveling to No. 7 Tolland or hosting No. 26 Granby Memorial.

    The quarterfinal round is scheduled for Saturday at the higher seed. The semifinals will take place Nov. 12 or 13 and the finals on Nov. 15 or 16 at a site to be announced.

    Suffield (16-0-0) is the top seed in the 30-team bracket.

    Stonington girls

    travel for opener

    Stonington will take to the road for its Class M girls’ soccer tournament opener on Monday at 2 p.m.

    The Bears (7-8-2) will face No. 11 seed Lauralton Hall (7-2-6). Stonington is the No. 22 seed among the 27 teams.

    The Bears would play again on Wednesday with a victory. Stonington would play the winner of No. 6 Rocky Hill vs. No. 27 Sheehan. The higher seed would host the game.

    The quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday. The semifinals are Nov. 11 or 12 and the finals Nov. 15 or 16.

    Wheeler hosts

    first-round game

    Wheeler (10-6-0) is the No. 10 seed in the boys’ Class S soccer tournament and will host No. 23 Coventry (5-8-3) on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

    The winner travels to No. 7 St.Paul Catholic on Thursday at 2 p.m. The quarterfinals will take place on Saturday and the semifinals on Nov. 12 or 13. The finals will be played on Nov. 15 or 16.

    Old Saybrook (14-1-1) is the No. 1 seed in the 23-team field.

    Wheeler hosts

    first-round game

    Wheeler, the No. 21 seed in the Class S girls’ soccer tournament, will host No. 12 Capital Prep on Monday at 2 p.m.

    Wheeler finished the season 6-9-0, while Capital Prep was 9-6-0. Capital Prep could not host the game since their field was unavailable, according to Wheeler AD Ellen Turner.

    The winner will travel to No. 5 Portland on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

    The quarterfinals are Friday at the higher seed. The semifinals are Nov. 11 or 12 and the finals Nov. 15 or 16.

    Parish Hill (14-1-0) is the top seed among the 21 teams in the tournament.
