  • Wheeler roundup: Putnam tops Lions

PUTNAM — Wheeler took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Kevin Knowles tripled and scored on Mike Dellaporta’s single, but Putnam shut down the Lions the rest of the way to post a 6-1 victory in a non-league baseball game Monday.

Putnam, once the Lions’ ECC-Small rival before leaving the conference after an 0-20 season in 2010, improved to 13-3. The Clippers play in the Constitution State Conference now. Wheeler fell to 3-12.

Dellaporta was the only Lion with multiple hits as he stroked two singles. Knowles and Matt Primmett, who doubled, contributed Wheeler’s only extra-base hits. Chris Munzer was Wheeler’s losing pitcher, allowing seven hits and three earned runs (six total) in 5 2⁄3 innings.

Wheeler travels to play New London 3:45 p.m. Thursday.
