WATERFORD — Though its finish was modest, Wheeler High’s golf team had its best showing in the ECC tournament in three years, taking 12th out of 17 teams Thursday at Great Neck Country Club.
The Lions’ team total of 408 was seven strokes better than 13th-place Griswold.
Killingly won the title with a 336, paced by John and Drew Aiken who finished second and third with a 76 and 77.
Michael Anderson was Wheeler’s top golfer. He shot 96 on the par-71 layout and finished 35th out of 85.
Peyton Mulhern shot 97 and finished in a five-way tie for 36th. Jake Umphlett (107) took 61st and Tyler Primmett (108) finished 63rd) to round up the Lions’ four scorers.
Wheeler tied for seventh place in 2011 with a 354, but shot 484 the next year and 440 last season.
